Transitioning
a relationship to end is a crucial part of the mentoring process.
If possible, plan ahead for the student's transition from having a
mentor to not having a mentor or a different mentor. |
 |
Encourage
your student to verbalize feelings about the transition and help
him/her feel a sense of closure. |
 |
Let
your student know that the last day of Mentoring will be
Month/Day. |
 |
Explain
why the program is ending. The school year is coming to an
end and with it the mentoring ends. |
 |
Be
positive and reinforce how well your student has improved over the
school year. |
 |
Be
prepared that your student may be upset. Listen, talk and
acknowledge their feelings. |
 |
Finally,
have fun during the last mentor sessions. Talk more and work
less. |
 |
Make
a goodbye book, card or drawing with your student. |
 |
Reminisce
about past activities and times you spent together.
