Mentoring Year End

Transitioning a relationship to end is a crucial part of the mentoring process. If possible, plan ahead for the student's transition from having a mentor to not having a mentor or a different mentor.
Encourage your student to verbalize feelings about the transition and help him/her feel a sense of closure.
Let your student know that the last day of Mentoring will be Month/Day.
Explain why the program is ending.  The school year is coming to an end and with it the mentoring ends.
Be positive and reinforce how well your student has improved over the school year.
Be prepared that your student may be upset.  Listen, talk and acknowledge their feelings.
Finally, have fun during the last mentor sessions.  Talk more and work less.
Make a goodbye book, card or drawing with your student.
Reminisce about past activities and times you spent together.
