A Mentor’s Role 

Mentoring is a structured and trusting 
relationship between young people and 
positive individuals who offer support and encouragement.
A mentor provides young people with counsel, friendship and reinforcement.
Mentoring is aimed at developing the 
confidence, competence and character of the mentee.

Who Needs Mentors?

35.2 million young people in the United States today need Mentors.

    1 out of 5 lives in poverty
    1 out of 10 will not finish high school

About half of young Americans - 17.6 million young people - want or need caring, adult mentors to help them succeed in life. 
Of those 17.6 million young people, 2.5 are in formal mentoring relationships.   
That leaves 15.1 million youth in need of mentoring.
 

Benefits of Mentoring!

Research confirms that mentoring works!   Young people who participate in 
mentoring relationships experience a number of positive benefits.

Mentored youth have better attendance in school.
Mentored youth have better attitudes towards school.
Mentoring appears to help prevent substance abuse and reduce some negative 
youth behaviors.
Mentored youth tend to trust their parents more and communicate better with them.  
They also feel they get more emotional support from their friends.
